The Children’s Imaginarium, a state-of-the-art, STEM-focused children’s museum opened in December, making this the first summer for the exciting new hub for learning and play in downtown Wausau. This vibrant addition to our community is housed in a newly remodeled 14,000 square foot space rented from HOM Furniture.
Following an extensive search for the perfect location, the museum ultimately landed on renting and renovating space from HOM Furniture, adjacent to their retail storefront. Ghidorzi Companies was tasked with the exterior transformation to create a cohesive campus feel to the development as well as the design-build construction of the newly acquired space, while keeping the HOM Furniture store operating with minimal interruption.
The lobby was designed to be welcoming and highly functional for efficient check-in with comfortable seating and ample space to store coats and boots. Inside the exhibit space, we maximized visual connections for families with an open floor plan to see the entire space at once. Additional breakout rooms are perfect for classes or party rentals, while other large spaces were left open for storage and future exhibits. Large floor-to-ceiling windows deliver a flood of natural light inside while enhancing the modern exterior aesthetic for museum-goers and anyone passing by.
The Imaginarium team was also a priority in the building layout. Offices, meeting spaces and the breakroom are all centrally located to the front desk for comfortable coworking space while staying guest focused.
The Children’s Imaginarium exhibits were meticulously designed with the help of nationally recognized exhibit fabricators, KidZibits. The goal was to create an environment that fosters discovery, imagination and learning through play, targeting children from two to 12 years and their families. The exhibits are rooted in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), offering an educational experience that is both interactive and engaging.
Since its opening, the Children’s Imaginarium has quickly become a beloved resource in Wausau, supporting local educational initiatives and offering a space where families can come together to learn and play.
