Hooray for the Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce and their new headquarters at the historic Depot at 209 Washington Street!
This exciting project just won the 2023 Wisconsin Main Street Award for the Best Historic Restoration Project from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), honoring outstanding downtown revitalization projects throughout Wisconsin.
Sam Rikkers, WEDC Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, stated “With many of these Main Street projects, we are preserving history and making history, leading by example in maintaining what sets Wisconsin apart.” This sentiment reflects the main values of the Main Street program, which aims to rejuvenate Wisconsin’s historic commercial districts while preserving their unique character.
The Depot, a cherished landmark dating back to its construction in 1899 as part of the Chicago North Western Railway, holds a significant place in Wausau’s history. Once a bustling hub for transportation and commerce, the Depot now stands as a symbol of the city’s heritage. Its recent transformation into the Chamber’s new office space exemplifies a harmonious blend of past and present.
Led by the Ghidorzi team, the restoration project meticulously preserved the Depot’s architectural integrity while modernizing its facilities to meet current needs. Careful attention was paid to enhancing accessibility, functionality, and visual appeal without compromising the building’s historical charm. The result is a space that honors the past while embracing the future.
