We just returned from NeoCon, the world’s largest commercial design expo, featuring thousands of products (many of them brand new), resources and ideas. In short, three days of pure energy and inspiration for architecture and interior design professionals like us.
The biggest takeaway? White is the new black! Once underestimated, taken for granted and often overlooked, White is stepping out with its finest attributes: fresh, crisp, new, airy, peaceful, clean, open, inviting, collaborative.
Here are the New Rules of White in commercial design, although the concepts are equally valid for residential:
White as a Backdrop. Move over black, White is emerging as a better blank canvas for showcasing everything from company logos to art pieces.
Low-Maintenance, Who’d Have Thought. Today’s Whites are more usable, cleanable and easier to maintain thanks to the increased durability and ultra-stain-resistance of materials and fabrics.
Accessorize, Accessorize. Because White accessories lack color, they allow other elements of the room to shine with an unexpected pop.
The New Wall Flower. Pure white walls are replacing creamy ivory and warm taupe, creating contrast that ranges from subtle to striking, depending on the boldness of other colors in the room.
So Much Wood, So Little Versatility. Wood-grain furniture and casework are taking a backseat to White, which achieves a crisper, more timeless appeal.
